 Photography Brief: Light & Presence

Concept
This project explores the relationship between natural light and human presence, capturing quiet, introspective moments shaped by environment and atmosphere.

Objective
To visually communicate how light defines mood, form, and emotion in both outdoor and indoor settings.

Scenes

  • Outdoor: A subject standing beneath a tree, with sunlight filtering through the leaves, creating soft, dappled patterns on the figure and ground.
  • Indoor: A subject positioned near a window, with natural light flooding into the room, highlighting form, texture, and stillness.

 

Visual Approach

  • Emphasis on soft, natural lighting
  • Minimal composition with strong attention to shadow and contrast

Outcome
A series of photographs that showcase the subtle power of light in shaping atmosphere and human presence.

 

Design Process: Light & Presence

1. Concept & Objective Explored how natural light shapes mood and presence, aiming to capture quiet, contemplative moments indoors and outdoors.

 

2. Scene Planning

  • Outdoor: Subject beneath a tree with dappled sunlight.
  • Indoor: Subject near a window with soft, natural light.
  • Focused on timing for diffused illumination.

 

3. Visual Approach Minimal composition, emphasis on shadow and contrast, muted palette, and calm atmosphere for consistency across scenes.

 

4. Execution & Outcome Captured multiple frames, refining angles and exposure to highlight light–subject interaction. Resulted in a cohesive series showing the subtle power of light in defining emotion and atmosphere.

 

 

Video Brief: Cheetah Awareness

Concept
This awareness video focuses on the declining population of cheetahs, highlighting their vulnerability and the urgent need for conservation.

Objective
To educate viewers about how cheetahs are becoming endangered due to habitat loss, human conflict, and environmental changes, while encouraging awareness and responsibility.

Approach
The video will combine impactful visuals of cheetahs in their natural environment with emotive storytelling. Contrasts between their strength and fragility will be used to create a powerful message.

Outcome
A compelling awareness piece that informs viewers and inspires them to care about the survival of cheetahs and the importance of protecting wildlife.

  • Defined the narrative focus: urgency of conservation and emotional connection to their survival.

  • Selected visuals of cheetahs in natural environments to contrast strength with fragility.

  • Crafted emotive storytelling supported by minimal narration or text.

  • Chose tone: emotional, thought‑provoking, and visually impactful.

 

3. Visual & Stylistic Choices

  • Strong visual storytelling with symbolic contrasts.

  • Minimal yet powerful narration to avoid distraction.

  • Emphasis on atmosphere and emotional resonance.

 

4. Execution

  • Combined footage of cheetahs with carefully timed narration and text overlays.

Campaign Brief: Smart Cities Start with Smart Data

Client
The South African Cities Network (SACN)

Concept
Smart Cities Start with Smart Data — a campaign that positions SACN as the driving force behind intelligent, data-led urban development in South Africa.

Objective
To increase SACN’s visibility, attract funding and partnerships, and establish the organisation as a leading thought leader in urban development locally and globally.

Problem
Although SACN has strong credibility within the urban sector, its visibility is limited outside of it, especially among corporates, funders, and international stakeholders.

Solution
A multi-phase, digitally driven campaign that uses storytelling, data visualisation, and real-world impact to simplify SACN’s work and make it more engaging and accessible.

Approach
The campaign unfolds in four phases:

  1. Awareness – Introduce SACN through simple, engaging content
  2. Engagement – Showcase real impact and success stories
  3. Conversion – Attract partners, sponsors, and funding
  4. Activation – Host a high-impact summit to connect stakeholders

 

Key Message
SACN transforms data into actionable insights that drive smarter, more inclusive, and sustainable cities.
